"TWO hot to handle, TWO cold to hold..."

This month (well, last month really) Julie is doubling our pleasure with two mixtapes! All of the tunes on the official mix have a unifying element to them -- I'll let you guys figure it out. The bonus mix was whipped up as a tribute to the K of P of sorts, and it should be making an appearance on the blog sometime soon, once I figure out my imeem upload capacity issues. In the meantime, just moonwalk over to your mailbox for the hard copy.

"Mood swing I can't let you win/ You bring me up, you bring me down..."

Feeling schizophrenic? This mix is for you. There are more ups and downs on it than a game of Chutes and Ladders. Bonus points to Suzanne for not putting something obvious (and dare I say shitty?) like "No Rain" on her May-weather-themed mix.

The May Mood-Swing Mix (For when it's partly happy to mostly crappy...) Tracklist:

1. Here Comes the Sun - Richie Havens
2. Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa - Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel
3. Summertime Clothes - Animal Collective
4. Sweet Life - !!!
5. Freckle Wars - Ecstatic Sunshine
6. Honey In The Sun - Camera Obscura
7. Another Sunny Day - Belle & Sebastian
8. A Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill - Jens Lekman
9. Le Fils De Jacques Dutronc - King Khan & The Shrines

16. Pablo Picasso - The Modern Lovers
17. Behind the Sun - The Good, the Bad & the Queen
18. Heavy Weather - Jarvis Cocker

Welcome to the Summer everyone!

Tapes 'n Tapes!

I'm just gonna warn you now. This post is about to get hella nerdy. There's nothing cool to read here, please move along.

Still reading? OMG, LOOK AT THESE FUCKING AWESOME THINGS! They're beautiful! Remember cassettes? Remember how they would get eaten up in the player, and you'd have to gently fish out the tape? Remember the feeling of satisfaction you'd get from winding the tape back onto the spool with a ballpoint pen (Bics worked the best, only losers used pencils)?

One time, my cassette copy of "Protection" got all cracked and stopped working, so I transplanted the reels into the case of a blank cassette. I felt like a genius.

How many of these cassettes did you have? I had these, these, these, & these. Check out tapedeck.org for more!

New Kids on the Glock

They also do tinkly covers of "Private Eyes", Lily Allen's "The Fear", and "In My Room" by the Beach Boys.

No glocked up versions of "Hangin' Tough" or "Please don't go Girl" yet though. Anyways, enjoy.

"In 1972, a crack commando unit was...

...sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire...The Yay! Team."

I like to think that this is what BA Baracus bumps in the van when he's pitying fools. Suckas, check out the Yay! Team Mix:

Marts Mijkstaap

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Copper Gate last night. Aquavit was sipped, Swedish meatballs were consumed, and mixtapes were handed out. This month's mix -- if you haven't guessed already -- has a Scandinavian bent, and that wasn't the only bending going on. Several of us made trips to view the naughty photo in the men's bathroom of the square-jawed lady with a little extra downstairs (it was only partially hanging out, so there's still room for debate). Anyways, I've put the new playlist up, and the photo in question (I SFW'ed it) and tracklist are below...

The Scandinavian Mix Mostly...(I'm not great at geography) Tracklist:

1. 13 - Hakkan Hellstom
2. Dead Sound - The Raveonettes
3. Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4. Fa Fa Fa - Datarock
5. Heartbeats - The Knife
6. Heartbeat - Annie
7. Elin - Magnus Carlson
8. Tonight I Have to Leave it - Shout Out Louds
9. Country Mile - Camera Obscura
10. Come Fly with Me - Anna Ternheim
11. Today I Will Dress Up - The Bear Quartet
12. The Worrying Kind - Maia Hirasawa
13. Cobrastyle - Robyn
14. Heartbeats - Jose Gonzalez
15. Oslo in the Summertime - Of Montreal
16. Brothersport - Animal Collective

The more observant of y'all will notice that the artists on this mix are only mostly Scandinavian, sorta like how that dude's only mostly lady. Thanks Dave!

Softer lesser slower weaker

Feeling the urge to irritate coworkers and annoy your live-in girlfriends? Here are a couple fun computer keyboard-based music thingys. Check out the iDaft, courtesy of Grace (well, courtesy of iDaft actually, but Grace showed it to me). Strap on your space helmet and rock out!

And please to enjoy the rainbow keyboard drum set (sent to me by Mr. March Mixtape, Dave). Click on the prismatic robot head to start the drum loop, and qwerty away on that shit ("B" is my fave). Bonus jitterbug points to anyone that recognizes where some of the samples are from.

Imaginary Band Fun III

So, this fake band phenomenon has turned into the hottest thing since I dunno, Robocop riding a unicorn...in hot pursuit of zombie pirate ninjas...on top of a rainbow made of bacon. Anyways, enough with the hyperbole, let's get on with the fake bands!

First up, we have Grace's second foray into the world of imaginary band formation. Introducing her side project,
Taichung Line:

Man, this guy was really disappointed that "this" wasn't "it." Or maybe he's just testing how high he can jump, you decide.

Next up is an entry by honorary club member Nicole:

Jaunde-Texte von Karl Atangana und Paul Messi
is a book written in German, apparently about a creepy cross between a Cirque du Soleil clown and Liberace. Sorry scary dude, I do not have the time. Please leave me alone. And take your yard decoration with you.

Last but not least, Suzanne presents...Nazir Kazharov
:

In Soviet Russia, imaginary band forms you!

Nice work everyone. Gold stars all around.

Imaginary Band Fun II

It looks like a couple of us have joined in on the fake band sensation that's sweeping the nation. First up, we have Grace's fake band Gazprom, which I imagine consists of five tuxedo-clad lead singers of Supergrass:

If that furry little face doesn't scream "more power," I don't know what does.

Next up is Heather's "bedwetting" (her description, not mine) fake band, Forever and Ever:

This album cover makes me think of the video for "No Rain." I bet Blind Melon still totally pee the bed.

Anyone else have a fake band?

Imaginary Band Fun

Guess there's a new internet meme going around. If you're like me, and just happen to be forming an imaginary band, and don't know what to name it, this is for you (and that's like everyone right?). Just follow these three simple steps:

Go to Wikipedia. Hit "random article" and the first article you get is the name of your band. Then go to “random quotations” and the last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album. Then, go to Flickr and click on “explore the last seven days” and the third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

Fun, yes? Your name, album title, and album art are all determined. Now you just gotta make the music and get signed to a record label. Easy!

January Mixtape Up!

Fellow ‘clubbers, I have uploaded the January Mixtape onto imeem for your online listening pleasure. To listen in, aim your internets at the embedded playlist to your right.

I’ve also created a new imeem group for us [that I now realize is a bitch to join, so I moved the blog over to Blogger where I can embed stuff thus eliminating the need to join the group to hear the music, so fuck those guys and fuck Wordpress too]. This is where I’d like to archive all of our mixes each month. Your invites have been sent already, let me know if you don’t get yours. And if you have, stick your dick in the mashed potatoes already, won’t you?

Ok, onto the liner notes:

1. Get Ready to Fly - Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve

I always like to start and end my mixes with songs that relate to each other somehow. Listen to the last song, then let it loop back to this one, and you’ll know what I mean.

2. Into the Galaxy - Midnight Juggernauts

I really didn’t want to like these guys because I think their name is stupid. I’ve decided to look past that though since this song is so good.

3. Needle in the Camel’s Eye - Brian Eno

4. Divine (Midnight Juggernaut Remix) - Sebastien Tellier

The original version of this song was selected to be France’s entry in the 2008 Eurovision Contest. For an ideal listening experience, this song should only be heard in a room solely illuminated by candlelight.

5. Nightdrive with You (Fear of Tigers Remix) - Anoraak

This song reminds me of When in Rome. I listened to a lot of C89 in the sixth grade.

6. The Songs of National Freedom - Richard Swift

His friends call him ‘Dicky.’

7. Paris is Burning - Ladyhawke

Ladyhawke is an old movie about this chick and this dude that turn into a hawk and a wolf respectively. When one them is in human form, the other is in animal form. A common debate amongst cinephiles is whether to categorize this film as a tragic romantic drama or bestiality porn.

8. The Fear - Lily Allen

Lily Allen goes in a new musical direction with this tune, and if you’re like me, that direction points just to the left of awesome (which is still really good).

9. Waved On - Engineers

Listening to this song is like how taking a warm bath would sound like, if baths were music.

10. Now You’re Gone - Secret Machines

11. Paris - Friendly Fires

I want to marry this song.

12. Never Miss a Beat - Kaiser Chiefs

13. Those Dancing Days - Those Dancing Days

I really enjoy the manic drumming on this track. Also gets extra points for being named after the band.

14. Disco Teeth - One Million Teeth

I’m not sure what ‘Disco Teeth’ are, but they’re probably really sparkly.

15. Veni Vedi Veci (Diplo Remix) - Black Lips

A search for ‘black lips’ on WebMD.com does not yield any relevant results.

16. Sunrise (Pocketknife’s Rise & $hine Remix) - Yeasayer

17. Sleepyhead - Passion Pit

I imagine that this is what the voices in Roger Rabbit’s head sound like.

18. Show Me - Mint Royale

19. Positive Contact - Deltron 3030

Del tha Funkee Homosapien is Ice Cube’s cousin. TRUE FACT!

Goin’ back like babies and pacifiers…

Six minute clip of Mariah Carey hitting her highest high notes, like ever. Make sure there are no dogs or stemware in the room

January Mixtape Preview

Club –

It’s been a long time coming, but I should have something for you guys this week. I just gotta burn these suckers, and they’ll be in the hands of the United States Postal Service before you know it! Until then, here’s a little sneak peek (songspotters, post in the comments section!):

A History of the Black Mullet

Looks like
Kanye is dipping into the ’80s again for his latest look (remember these?). Although it’s not completely comprehensive (where’s Stevie B?), please to enjoy this history of the black mullet on the Complex magazine blog.

Mark your calendars...

‘Tapers
, your months have been assigned! Earlier this morning, I threw some names in a cowboy hat, had a half-asleep Nicole draw them at random, counted the number of letters you had in your names, then did some MASH-style month randomization with the 2005 edition of a The OC calendar (thanks Jason!). Here are the results (description of the photo accompanying your month in parentheses):
January: Victor Nguyen (Fresh-out-of-juvie Ryan looking tough in the Cohen’s backyard, his hand partially down his pants)
February
: Heather Holverstott (Marissa, looking off into the distance as a mysterious blurry figure looms in the background)
March: Dave Wohrman (Summer and Seth at an unseen craps table, the former offering the latter a chance to blow on the former’s dice for luck)
April
: Bill Nordwall (The OC kids are on a couch, trying to look casual to varying degees of success. In particular, Summer appears to be slightly constipated)
May
: Suzanne Asprea (A medium shot of Summer on the aforementioned couch, either giving us her best come-hither look, or maybe she’s still constipated )
June
: Julie Brewer (A portrait of OC jock Luke, originator of the term, “Welcome to the OC bitch!”)
July
: Karryce Burger (Another group shot — Ryan, Marissa, Sandy, and Sandy’s powerful eyebrows)
August
: Brian Hyder (The OC kids have eschewed the couch for the floor now, and it appears that at least one of them is up to no good, based on the way Summer is resting her hand on Marissa’s leg)
September
: Grace Kang (Marissa mid-laugh, perhaps reminiscing about the time her father was punched out by an angry investor at her cotillion)
October
: Jason Van Regenmorter (Sandy and his eyebrows make their second appearance in the calendar — this time they’re straightening Ryan’s tie)
November: Dave Miller (Ryan — actually not looking like a wounded puppy dog this time — admiringly gazes at Marissa while she forces a get-the-fuck-away-from-me smile)
December
: Sara Hankins (A group shot of the entire cast, welcoming us to the OC, bitch)
So there you have it ‘tapers. Ready, set, mix!
